The Night’s Call: Rising for a Heavy Mission
قُمِ اللَّيْلَ إِلَّا قَلِيْلًا. نِّصْفَهُٓ أَوِ انقُصْ مِنْهُ قَلِيْلًا .يَآ أَيُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُ
“O you, wrapped up in clothes, stand at night (in prayer) except a little—half of it, or make it a little less.” (73:1-3)
“This is a call from on high, given by God Almighty. Arise, for you have a great mission and a heavy burden. Arise, for you must exert sustained effort. Arise, for the time of sleep and comfort is over. You must prepare yourself for the task that lies ahead.
This is an awe-inspiring command that pulls the Prophet ﷺ from the warmth of his bed, from a peaceful home and a loving family, and thrusts him into the midst of a severe struggle. A person who lives only for himself may find comfort and ease, but he lives small and dies small. The noble soul who shoulders such a weighty responsibility sees life differently: what does he have to do with sleep, comfort, a warm bed, or an easy life?” (Fī Dhilāl al-Qur’ān)
How Do You Recite the Qur’an?
وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْآنَ تَرْتِيْلًا
“…Recite the Quran slowly and distinctly.” (73:4)
- Allah ﷻ commands the Prophet ﷺ to recite with tartīl. Tartīl refers to reciting slowly and calmly, making each word distinct, and not exceeding the limits. Reciting like this ensures that the tongue, heart, limbs and organs are in perfect harmony with one other.
- When Allah commanded the standing at night, He followed it with the command to recite the Qur’an with tartīl, so that the worshipper may attain presence of heart, reflection, and deep contemplation of the meanings of the verses.
- Whoever reflects on the Qur’an in this manner will feel their heart rejoice, tasting the sweetness of īmān and the coolness of certainty.
Reflect: When you recite, is your heart truly present, or is the recitation only on your tongue?
The Wisdom of Tahajjud
After commanding the Prophet ﷺ to leave sleep, stand in night prayer and reflect on the Qur’an, Allah explains the reason:
إِنَّا سَنُلْقِيْ عَلَيْكَ قَوْلًا ثَقِيْلًا
“We will soon send down to you a weighty revelation” (73:5).
- This refers to the Qur’ān and the immense responsibility it brings. Imam al-Rāzī (raḥimahullāh) explains that it is called “heavy” because of its greatness and the weight of its impact.
- The wisdom behind the command of night prayer is that the heart must be prepared to receive this divine speech. Worship in the quiet of night and turning to Allah in remembrance and supplication, prepares the soul for the radiance of Allah’s majesty.
- Receiving this flood of light and knowledge, understanding profound cosmic truths, and remaining steadfast on the path — without distraction — are heavy tasks that require long preparation. Night prayer and reflection are the spiritual provision for bearing this responsibility, protecting the heart from the whispers of Shayṭān and guiding it through the darkness.
The Sweetness of Night Worship
إِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ اللَّيْلِ هِيَ أَشَدُّ وَطْئًا وَّأَقْوَمُ قِيْلًا
“Indeed, worship in the night is more impactful and suitable for recitation” (73:6).
- Night prayer leaves a deep impression on the soul. In the stillness of the night, the heart is able to steer itself away from the worries and distractions of the day; the tongue and heart can easily concur to absorb the weighty message of the Lord of the worlds. It also protects a slave from riyā’ (showing off) and is an achievable ‘secret’ deed’ between him and Allah.
- There is a unique sweetness in worship at night. Abū Sulaymān al-Dārānī (raḥimahullāh) said, “By Allah, if it wasn’t for the night prayer (qiyām al-layl), I would not have loved the world. By Allah, the people of the night (prayer) experience more delight in their night than the people of entertainment experience in their entertainment.”
Tarbiyah Through Tahajjud
- Tahajjud grants deep spiritual strength and leaves a lasting imprint on the heart, as it requires striving against the nafs and Shayṭān. It was emphasised from the very beginning for the Companions (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhum) because their mission required a fortified heart.
- Regular tahajjud purifies the soul, disciplines the nafs and illuminates the heart. It is essential for anyone who works for the dīn, especially scholars and callers to Allah, for none can carry its weight without this spiritual nourishment.
- Imām al-Rāzī explains that the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions were commanded to perform tahajjud so that it would motivate them to be fully prepared to face the opponents of the call to Islam. It was meant to cultivate their training — both physically and spiritually — in the best possible way. This discipline was designed to build endurance and patience, enabling them to bear hardships, withstand dangers and overcome the most difficult trials. As a result of this tarbiyah, the Muslims were able to spread across the East and West, conquering lands through their striving, patience, and perseverance in the way of Allah.
Focus Fully on Allah
After instructing the Prophet ﷺ to stand the night in prayer, Allah (subḥānahū wa taʿālā) says,
وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلْ إِلَيْهِ تَبْتِيْلًا
“And remember the Name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him wholeheartedly” (73:8).
Tabaṭṭul means turning away from everything else and directing your whole being to Allah alone. It is complete devotion, free from distraction.
The stillness of the night allows the servant to forget about his worldly worries and distractions, and focus fully on Allah. The secret of ṣalāh, and what transforms it from being a lifeless body to a real, moving and powerful force, is turning to Allah fully and completely with your heart. When placing your heart before Allah, do it with utmost humility, as though you are seeing Him. Go to Allah with full presence and concentration. Incline to Him completely. Focus on Him Alone.
Seeking Allah’s Favour
ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) said: “There is no state in which death could come to me — after jihād in the path of Allah — more beloved to me than that it comes while I am between the two saddlebags of my mount, seeking the bounty of Allah.” Then he recited the āyah:
وَآخَرُوْنَ يَضْرِبُوْنَ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَبْتَغُوْنَ مِنْ فَضْلِ اللّٰهِ ۙ وَآخَرُوْنَ يُقَاتِلُوْنَ فِيْ سَبِيْلِ اللّٰهِ
“…Some will be travelling throughout the land seeking Allah’s bounty, and some fighting in the cause of Allah…” (73:20)
This āyah carries glad tidings for those who strive to earn ḥalāl provision through trade and lawful work.
Allah paired those who seek lawful livelihood with those who strive in jihād, elevating both pursuits. Some of the Companions understood from this verse the virtue of commerce and travel in its pursuit, since Allah mentioned these causes as a justification for easing the obligation of prolonged night prayer.
