Are You Ready?
“By those (angels) stripping out (evil souls) harshly, and those pulling out (good souls) gently.” (79:1-2)
- Allah swears by the angels who take souls at the moment of death: a moment that differs greatly between people.
- The souls of the disbelievers are violently dragged out with severe hardship and intensity. In contrast, the souls of the believers are taken by the angels of mercy with gentleness, ease, and honour. Their souls depart smoothly, longing to meet their Lord.
- The believer loves to meet Allah, and Allah loves to meet them.
Reflect: How do you wish your soul to be extracted at the time of death? How often do you think of this moment?
Act: What do you need to change today to prepare for that moment?
The Angels: Perfect Servants of Allah
“And by those gliding swiftly, and those taking the lead vigorously, and those conducting affairs (obediently)!” (79:3-5)
- The heavens are filled with angels in constant obedience, moving in perfect submission to their Lord. They glide, carry out commands, and swiftly execute the affairs Allah assigns to them, without any delay or hesitation.
- For the believer who affirms the unseen, this reality strengthens certainty: the universe is not empty, but filled with Allah’s angels, all fulfilling His command with perfect order and discipline.
Reflect: If the angels, despite their purity and honour, rush to obey Allah without delay, then how much more should we swiftly obey and submit to our Lord.
The Final Hour
“On the Day when the Blast reverberates, followed by a second Blast. On that Day, hearts will tremble with their eyes downcast.” (79-6-9)
- With the first great blast of the Hour, the order of the universe will collapse. The earth will shake with overwhelming force, systems will dissolve, movement will cease, and all voices will fall silent: a declaration that the Day of Resurrection has begun.
- With the second blast, hearts will be filled with terror, rising to the throats in fear. Every soul will be preoccupied with what it has sent forth for this moment.
- Even those eyes that once looked upon others with arrogance and disdain will be lowered in humiliation. Neither wealth nor status will be of any benefit, and every claim of superiority will vanish before the reality of standing before Allah.
Reflect: Pride disappears when truth appears. What once seemed powerful becomes powerless on that Day. Only a heart prepared for Allah will find safety.
Know Your Lord
“And I will guide you to your Lord so that you will be in awe of Him.” (79:19)
- True guidance is not merely information; it is knowing Allah, and that knowledge naturally produces khashyah (awe and reverent fear) of Him.
- Whoever truly knows Allah will fear Him. The deeper you know Him, the greater your awe of Him.
- Fear is the foundation of all goodness: whoever fears Allah is led to every form of righteousness.
Act: Deeply engage with the Names and Attributes of Allah so you can increase your awe of Him.
Lessons From the Past
“Surely in this is a lesson for whoever stands in awe of (Allah).” (79:26)
- The events of the past nations, their destruction, and the humiliation that befell them are not merely historical accounts. Rather, they contain ʿibrah (lessons and warnings) for those whose hearts contain khashyah (reverent fear of Allah).
- History often repeats itself by Allah’s will, and the wise one is he who takes from it guidance to correct his present and prepare his future.
- The benefit drawn from these signs is proportional to what resides in the heart: the greater the fear of Allah, the deeper the lesson taken.
How to Attain Paradise
“And as for those who were in awe of standing before their Lord and restrained themselves from desires, Paradise will certainly be (their) home.” (79:40–41)
True khashyah (reverent fear of Allah) is shown in how a servant lives: he is careful that Allah does not see him except upon goodness and obedience. He does not regard Allah as the least significant of those watching him.
Reflect: Your outcome is shaped by your choices. If you restrain your nafs for the sake of Allah in this world, Jannah will be your eternal home.
The Shortness of This World
“On the Day they see it, it will be as if they had stayed (in the world) no more than one evening or its morning.” (79:46)
- On the Day of Resurrection, the long life of this world will appear astonishingly brief.
- After reciting this verse, al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (raḥimahullāh) said: “O son of Ādam, this world is only a morning or an evening, so can you not be patient in leaving sin?”
- This life that people compete for and exhaust themselves over is, in reality, nothing more than a fleeting moment in the scale of eternity. How astonishing that something so brief is exchanged for the everlasting Hereafter.
Reflect: Seize every moment in obedience and fear that any time spent away from Allah is a loss.
