WEATHER

WHEN IT RAINS

O Allah, make it a beneficial rain.

Allāhumma ṣayyiban nāfiʿā.

Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw rain, he used to say [the above]. (Bukhārī 1032)

Anas bin Mālik (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) reported: “It rained upon us as we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah removed his cloth (from a part of his body) till the rain fell on it. We said: ‘O Messenger of Allah , why did you do this?’ He said: ‘Because it (the rainfall) has just come from the Exalted Lord.'” (Muslim 898)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Two supplications are not rejected: at the time of adhān and under rain.” (Hākim in Mustadrak 2534, Tabarānī in Muʿjam al-Kabīr 5756)

WHEN IT RAINS HEAVILY

O Allah, let the rain fall around us and not upon us. O Allah, [let it fall] on the pastures, hills, valleys and the roots of trees.

Allāhumma ḥawālaynā wa lā ʿalaynā, Allāhumma ʿala-l-ākāmi wa-ẓ-ẓirāb, wa buṭūni-l-awdiyah, wa manābiti-sh-shajar.

Anas bin Mālik (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) said, “A person entered the Mosque on a Friday through the gate facing the Daril- Qada’ and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was standing delivering the Khutba (sermon). The man stood in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, livestock are dying and the roads are cut off; please ask Allah for rain.’ So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised both his hands and said, ‘O Allah! Bless us with rain. O Allah! Bless us with rain. O Allah! Bless us with rain!” Anas (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) added, “By Allah, there were no clouds in the sky and there was no house or building between us and the mountain of Salʿa. Then a big cloud like a shield appeared from behind it (i.e. Salʿa Mountain) and when it came in the middle of the sky, it spread and then rained. By Allah! We could not see the sun for a week. The next Friday, a person entered through the same gate and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering the Friday Khutba and the man stood in front of him and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! The livestock are dying and the roads are cut off; Please pray to Allah to withhold rain.’ “Anas (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) added, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised both his hands and said, ‘O Allah, let the rain fall around us and not upon us. O Allah, [let it fall] on the pastures, hills, valleys and the roots of trees.” Anas (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) added, “The rain stopped and we came out, walking in the sun.” Sharik asked Anas (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) whether it was the same person who had asked for rain the previous Friday. Anas (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) replied that he did not know. (Bukhārī 1014)

UPON HEARING THUNDER

How Perfect is the One Whom the thunder exalts with praise of Him, as do the angels in awe of Him. (Muwatta’)

Subḥāna-lladhī yusabbiḥur-raʿdu bi-ḥamdihī wa-l-malā’ikatu min khīfatih.

It is reported that when Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr would hear thunder, he would say [the above]. He would then say: “This is a severe warning for the people on earth.” (ِAl-Adab al-Mufrad 723, Muwatta’ 3641)

WHEN THE WIND BLOWS

O Allah, indeed I ask You for its good, the good of what is in it, and the good of that it was sent with. And I seek Your protection from its evil, the evil of what is in it, and the evil that it was sent with.

Allāhumma innī as’aluka khayrahā wa khayra mā fīhā wa khayra mā ursilat bih, wa aʿūdhu bika min sharrihā wa sharri mā fīhā wa sharri mā ursilat bih.

ʿĀishā (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhā) reported: “Whenever the wind was stormy, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say [the above] and when there was a thunder and lightning in the sky, his colour changed, and he went out and in, backwards and forwards; and when the rain came, he felt relieved, and I noticed that (the sign of relief) on his face. ʿĀishā (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhā) asked him (about it) and he said: It (thunder and lightning) may be as the people of ʿAd said: When they saw a cloud coming to their valley they said:” It is a cloud which would give us rain” (46:24). (Muslim 899)

WHEN DOGS BARK

I seek protection in Allah from the rejected Shayṭān.

Aʿūdhu bi-llāhi mina-sh-Shayṭāni-r-rajīm.

The Messenger of Allah said: “When you hear the barking of dogs and the braying of donkeys at night, seek Allah’s protection from them, for they see what you do not see.” (Abū Dāwūd 5103)
