Reflect on Your Humble Beginnings

“Did We not create you from a worthless fluid, placing it in a secure place until an appointed time? We (perfectly) ordained (its development). How excellent are We in doing so!”

  • One of the strongest remedies against pride and arrogance is contemplation of our own creation. Reflecting on the origin of our being restores us to humility before God, reminding us of our natural place as devoted worshippers.
  • Every life is measured and known by Allah: a fixed term determined from the moment of conception to the moment of birth, and every detail is perfectly calculated. How blessed we are that Allah created us in the most excellent form, the most beautiful shape, according to the most precise measure.

The Endless Signs of Allah

“Did We not make the earth a container that collects the living and the dead? And placed upon it towering, firm mountains, and provided you with fresh water to drink?” (77:25-7)

  • Not only is the Earth a home for all living creatures, it also holds the billions who have died throughout history within its soil. Just as homes are a blessing for the living, so too are graves a mercy for the dead.
  • The wonders of creation never cease: towering mountains that stabilise the earth and fresh, sweet water flowing from rivers, springs, and rain. These are among God’s countless blessings. How unfortunate is the one who does not recognise the greatness of their Creator.
  • The mountains anchor the land, preventing it from shaking, and the water sustains life: people, animals, and crops alike. Every element of the earth, from its peaks to its rivers, speaks of divine wisdom and mercy.

Reflect: The earth gathers all creation, yet will eventually release them for accountability on the Day of Judgement.

The Day of Decision

(It will be said to them,) “This is the Day of Decision. We have assembled you and the earlier ones together. So if you have a scheme (to save yourselves), then use it against Me.” Woe on that Day to the deniers! (77:38-40)

  • On that Day, Allah will gather all creatures — both the earlier generations and the latter ones — to judge them with absolute justice. The righteous will be rewarded for their good deeds, and the wrongdoers will face the consequences of their evil, according to a precise and perfect balance.
  • Allah also challenges and rebukes those who lied and deceived in this world, exposing their falsehoods. Every trick and scheme they relied upon will fail, and they will realise that no worldly cunning can avail them on that Day. This is the ultimate warning and the final admonition: ‘Woe on that Day to the deniers!’

The Rewards of the Righteous

Indeed, the righteous will be amid (cool) shade and springs and any fruit they desire. (They will be told,) “Eat and drink happily for what you used to do.” Surely this is how We reward the good-doers. (77:41-44)

  • The Qur’ān shifts the scene from the blazing torment of Hell to the gentle breezes and delights of Paradise, painting a picture of bliss for the righteous. While the disbelievers suffer on that Day, those who prepared for it through good deeds experience it as a day of joy, light, and hope. They are enveloped in shade and flowing springs, a vivid reward for their īmān and perseverance.
  • Paradise is adorned with lush gardens, flowing rivers, magnificent palaces, and sweet fruits. It offers spiritual bliss, honour, and abundant praise from the Holy One, the Source of Peace. Allah greets them: “Eat and drink happily for what you used to do.” Truly, this is the perfect reward for those who do good.

Reflect: How can you be of the ‘muḥsinīn’ (good-doers) so Allah rewards you with the incredible reward of Jannah?
