    Surah al-Hujurat - Reflection 15
Guard Your Brotherhood & Sisterhood

After affirming the brotherhood of the believers, the Qur’ān warns against the behaviours that breed hostility and lead to conflict, cutting them off at their roots.

• The path to preserving brotherhood (mentioned in the previous āyah) is not only avoiding open conflict, but staying away from the sins of the tongue.

• The verse begins with a clear prohibition of mockery, which is to belittle and ridicule others.

• Allah uses the plural words in ‘qawm’ and ‘nisā’ to show that, mockery doesn’t always happen alone and often involves others laughing, encouraging, enjoying it or not stopping it, and they all share in the sin. Even if it starts with one person, it quickly turns into group behaviour, especially in gatherings/online.

• Such behaviour springs from arrogance, while the one being mocked may in fact be greater in rank and more beloved to Allah than the mocker.

• As-Saʿdī (raḥimahullāh) said, “It may be that the one who is mocked is better than the one who mocks, and this is generally the case in reality; for mockery does not occur except from a heart filled with the defects of character.”

• People judge only outward appearances, while Allah knows what lies hidden within hearts.

Reflect: What causes people to ridicule others? What impact does ridiculing others have on the perpetrator, the victim and society?

Act: Identify five weaknesses you have. Reflect on them the next time you feel inclined to ridicule someone.

Like fasting, the reward of ṣabr has been left unspecified. It has been kept a surprise. This is because it is a difficult quality to attain. To persevere and not give up, to endure life’s difficulties without complaint and to continue struggling against all the odds is a trait of the great. It is as Allah described, one of the “matters that require strong resolve” (31:17)

* Virtues of Ramadan 26

Al-Masjid al-Aqṣā stands empty in these blessed days. For the fifth consecutive day, the Israeli occupation continues its closure.

This is the very masjid where our beloved Prophet ﷺ led the other Prophets in ṣalāh on the night of al-Isrāʾ and al-Miʿrāj.

The Prophet’s ﷺ leading of the other Prophets in prayer on the Night of al-Isrāʾ and al-Miʿrāj is a clear indication that the *final identity of al-Masjid al-Aqṣā is Islamic.* Through this event, the connection of al-Masjid al-Aqṣā became firmly established with the Muslim Ummah, whose Messenger ﷺ led all the Prophets in that sacred place.

Al-Masjid al-Aqṣā belongs to the Muslims.

We must not allow the closure of al-Masjid al-Aqṣā to become normal.

Speak about al-Masjid al-Aqṣā, and continue to remember it in your duʿā’.

How the Qur’an Shaped the Best Generation

The Qur’ān was the manual through which the Prophet ﷺ nurtured the best generation—one defined by unwavering imān, a deep love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ and the pursuit of iḥsān.

The Qur’ān transformed their hearts, minds, characters and their entire lives. This did not happen overnight. In fact, the Qur’ān was revealed over a period of 23 years to allow the companions to understand, internalise and shape their character according to it.
