When Allah ﷻ asked Ibrāhīm (ʿalayhis-salām) to announce the call for ḥajj to all people, Ibrāhīm (ʿalayhis-salām) asked, “O Lord, how can my voice reach all the people?” Allah ﷻ replied, “Make an announcement, and it is upon Me to convey.” So Ibrāhīm (ʿalayhis-salām) climbed Mount Abū Qubays and proclaimed: “O people, your Lord has commanded you to perform ḥajj of this House, so that He may reward you with Paradise and protect you from Hell-fire. So, perform ḥajj.”
Allah ﷻ made his voice reach everyone on earth: humankind and jinn alike. They answered his call from the most distant villages to the crowded cities.
You were among them. You heard. You responded. You have been granted the honour of living this once-in-a-lifetime moment with Him. Now, you are here, carrying the covenant of renewing your commitment to Him.
“Labbayk Allāhumma labbayk — Here I am, O Allah, here I am.”
The Fifth Pillar of Islam
Ḥajj is one of the greatest acts of worship. It is the fifth pillar of Islam and one of its most powerful symbols. It is magnificent in every sense: in its rituals, benefits and impact. Ḥajj is a journey of transformation. It is a practical training in self-discipline and striving against the soul in pursuit of higher ideals. It teaches powerful lessons in belief, worship and character. It is a process of spiritual purification, elevation, and complete submission to Allah, leading to a heart and soul that are both purified and profoundly transformed.
Hajj is a journey of love. It is a golden opportunity to connect your heart to its Creator and to truly experience the joy of worshipping Him. Throughout ḥajj, you declare His Oneness, perfection and grandeur. One of the greatest objectives of ḥajj is to remember Allah, glorify Him and engage in deep conversation with Him.
Every act in ḥajj is carried out in obedience to Allah and as an expression of true servitude to Him, even if you do not understand the purpose of it. These acts are a response to His call and a reflection of your commitment to follow and emulate His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ.
Ḥajj is a reminder of the hereafter. From the iḥrām to the gathering at ʿArafah to spending the night at Muzdalifah, every step you take in ḥajj is a reminder of the journey of your soul to the hereafter.
Ḥajj is the central point for the gathering of Muslims. It is a reminder of the strength of the ummah and the power of its unified force. It gives you the opportunity to connect with Muslims from across the globe and renew your love and responsibility to the ummah.
Ḥajj connects you to the legacy of the Prophets, especially Ibrāhīm (ʿalayhis-salām) and his noble family. It lets you reflect on the roots of our incredible dīn, the light of the Qur’ān, and the early generation who lived through the Revelation and sacrificed their lives and wealth to spread the dīn of Allah to far corners of the earth.
Ḥajj should mark a turning point in your life. If performed with genuine sincerity and humility, you will return with a renewed sense of taqwā (mindfulness of Allah) in both private and public, and kindness toward His creation in both word and deed.
You will no longer live for yourself. Your aspirations will no longer be shallow. Instead, your new life motto will be:
Say, “Surely my prayer, my sacrifice, my life, and my death are all for Allah — Lord of all worlds. He has no partner. So I am commanded, and so I am the first to submit.” (6:162-3).
“…Pilgrimage to the House is an obligation by Allah upon whoever is able among the people. And whoever disbelieves, then surely Allah is not in need of (any of His) creation” (3:97).

![Surah al-Hujurat - Reflection 23
The True Believers & the Sweetness of Iman
• The true believers are those who have tasted the essence and sweetness of īmān, firmly anchored in their faith, unmoved by the storms of trials and untrapped by the snares of desires and doubts; their hearts fully embrace the delight of īmān, leading them to give up what they love most — their wealth and even their own lives — for the sake of Allah.
• The phrase “never doubting” signals that this path contains trials, temptations, and obstacles. It calls the believer to vigilance, constant supplication, and reliance upon Allah for steadfastness.
• When īmān is not firmly rooted, trials can shake the heart, letting doubts creep in and potentially leading to the loss of faith. Ibn al-Qayyim (raḥimahullāh) says,
“Doubts will not be removed from the heart until the servant arrives at this state [of tasting the sweetness of īmān].” Even the believer may face moments of hesitation under severe trials, but the one who remains steadfast, resists doubt, and maintains connection with Allah despite life’s storms is truly deserving of this rank. This verse reminds believers to stay resolute, patient, and upright when hardships strike.
Reflect: What can you do to strengthen your īmān and yaqīn to the extent that when trials come, your heart remains steadfast?
Act: Spend at least 15 minutes today reciting Qur’ān with tadabbur (reflection) to strengthen your īmān, or go outdoors and reflect on Allah’s creation while doing dhikr. Put your phone away and devote your heart and mind to Allah ﷻ.
