CLOTHES

BEFORE REMOVING CLOTHES

بِسْمِ اللهِ

In the Name of Allah.

Bismi-llāh

Anas b. Mālik (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allah said: “The screen between the jinn and the nakedness of the children of Ādam when they take off their garments is that they say [the above].” (Tabarānī in Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ 7066)

AFTER WEARING CLOTHES

All praise is to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, without any power or might on my part.

Alḥamdu li-llāhi-l-ladhī kasānī hādha-th-thawb, wa razaqanīhi min ghayri ḥawli-m-minnī wa lā quwwah.

Mu’ādh b. Anas (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: The Messenger of Allah said: “If anyone puts on a garment and says [the above], his past and future sins will be forgiven.” (Abū Dāwūd 4023, Tirmidhī 3458)

WHEN WEARING NEW CLOTHES

O Allah, all praise is for You! as You have clothed me, I ask You for its good and the good of that for which it was made, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of that for which it was made.

Allāhumma laka-l-ḥamdu Anta kasawtanīhi, as’aluka min khayrihi wa khayri mā ṣuniʿa lahu, wa aʿūdhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri mā ṣuniʿa lahu.

Abū Sa’īd al-Khudhrī (raḍiy Allāhu ‘anhu) reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ put on clothes, he would name each item – whether it was a shirt, pair of trousers or turban – and say: [the above]. (Abū Dāwūd 4020, Tirmidhī 1767)

TO BE SAID TO SOMEONE WEARING NEW CLOTHES

تُبْلِي وَيُخْلِفُ اللَّهُ تَعَالى

May you wear it out and Allah replace it (with another).

Tublī wa yukhlifu-llāhu taʿālā.

Abū Naḍrah said: When any of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ put on a new garment, [the above] was said to him. (Abū Dāwūd 4020)
