Istiftah (The Opening Duʿa’) 4

Allāhu akbaru kabīrā, wa-lḥamdu li-llāh kathīrā, wa subḥāna-llāhi bukratan wa aṣilā.

Allah is Greater, the Greatest: abundant praise is for Allah, and how Perfect is Allah in the morning and the evening.

ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar (radiy Allāhū ‘anhumā) narrated, “Once we were praying with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man said [the above]. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ (after the ṣalāh) asked, “Who uttered those words?” The man replied, “It was me, O Messenger of Allah.” He ﷺ said, “I was amazed by them – the doors of heaven were opened for them.” Ibn ʿUmar said, “I have not stopped saying these words since I heard this statement of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” (Muslim 601).

Muʿādh b. Jabal (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) wept on his deathbed and said: “I weep because I will miss the thirst I felt when I fasted, praying at night during the winter, and sitting knee to knee with the scholars during the gatherings of knowledge.”

The Eternal Bliss of Paradise

• Paradise is ultimate bliss; free from the trials, fatigue, and imperfections of this world.

• Always keep in mind the reality of Paradise: the eternal joy Allah has prepared for His obedient servants.

• Whenever you feel worn down or weighed down by the hardships of this life, remind yourself of the bliss of Paradise. And when laziness or a lack of motivation holds you back from good deeds, let the thought of Paradise renew your resolve.

Duʿa: A Sign of Strength

The Prophet ﷺ said, “The most incapable person is the one who fails to make duʿā’; and the most miserly person is the one who is stingy in giving salām” (Ibn Ḥibbān).

This ḥadīth teaches us the true meaning of helplessness and shows who is truly the most powerless. It is not the blind, the disabled, or the physically weak, but rather the one who is unable to ask and plead sincerely with the Creator.

Unfortunately, many people misunderstand this. They think duʿā’ is only for the weak or the helpless, a last resort for those who don’t strive hard. But in reality, duʿā’ is a sign of strength and connection, not weakness or laziness.
