Surah al-Hujurat - Reflection 23

The True Believers & the Sweetness of Iman

• The true believers are those who have tasted the essence and sweetness of īmān, firmly anchored in their faith, unmoved by the storms of trials and untrapped by the snares of desires and doubts; their hearts fully embrace the delight of īmān, leading them to give up what they love most — their wealth and even their own lives — for the sake of Allah.

• The phrase “never doubting” signals that this path contains trials, temptations, and obstacles. It calls the believer to vigilance, constant supplication, and reliance upon Allah for steadfastness.

• When īmān is not firmly rooted, trials can shake the heart, letting doubts creep in and potentially leading to the loss of faith. Ibn al-Qayyim (raḥimahullāh) says,
“Doubts will not be removed from the heart until the servant arrives at this state [of tasting the sweetness of īmān].” Even the believer may face moments of hesitation under severe trials, but the one who remains steadfast, resists doubt, and maintains connection with Allah despite life’s storms is truly deserving of this rank. This verse reminds believers to stay resolute, patient, and upright when hardships strike.

Reflect: What can you do to strengthen your īmān and yaqīn to the extent that when trials come, your heart remains steadfast?

Act: Spend at least 15 minutes today reciting Qur’ān with tadabbur (reflection) to strengthen your īmān, or go outdoors and reflect on Allah’s creation while doing dhikr. Put your phone away and devote your heart and mind to Allah ﷻ.

If you are unable to perform iʿtikāf for the full ten days, then try to do two days over the weekend, or even one day. Even if you can’t stay for the whole day, spend as much time as possible in the masjid focusing on worshipping Allah, and striving to attain the greater goals of iʿtikāf. For those who are unable to attend the masjid, they should do the same at home.

Surah al-Hujurat - Reflection 22
Are You Truly a Mu’min?

• This āyah clearly establishes that Īmān is a higher rank than Islām. When mentioned together, Islām refers to outward submission and visible compliance, while Īmān is an inward reality that settles firmly within the heart. For this reason, Allah says, “Īmān has not yet entered your hearts,” meaning it has not fully taken root, nor has its true essence been realised.

• Ibn Kathīr (raḥimahullāh) explains that the Bedouins mentioned in this verse were not hypocrites, but Muslims whose faith had not yet become firmly established. They claimed for themselves a rank higher than what they had truly attained, so they were corrected. Had they been hypocrites, they would have been exposed and condemned outright.

• These Bedouins were Muslims, but not Mu’minīn (believers), as īmān had not fully entered and merged into their hearts. They were not disbelievers, but they were yet to taste the reality of īmān. Ibn al-Qayyim (raḥimahullāh) says,
“Indeed īmān has a joy and sweetness in the heart. Whoever does not experience it either lacks or is deficient in his īmān.”

• Allah then reassures them: “If you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not diminish anything of your deeds.” This affirms that sincere obedience is never lost with Allah. No effort is wasted, and no reward is reduced.

Reflect: When you perform other acts of worship, are you aware of the actions of the heart or do you focus only on the outward ritual?

Act: Is your Islām merely visible, or is your īmān steadily settled into your heart? Ask Allah to grant you the sweetness and certainty of īmān: firm belief that endures trials, resists doubts, and draws you ever closer to Him.
